Current Events
In July 2011 one our dental hygienists, Kendra Kleppe, took part in a dental mission to Leon, Nicaragua to support an initiative to create the country's first dental hygiene program at Universdad Nacional de Autonoma-Leon (UNAN-Leon) Dental School.
During the two week mission, Kendra, a graduate student at Old Dominion University, and two other faculty members from ODU's School of Dental Hygiene, presented lectures to the dental school faculty, students, and local practicing dentists on the role of a dental hygienist, practice management, and other oral health topics. The team also collaborated with UNAN-Leon faculty on the dental hygiene program curriculum and spoke with local healthcare officials on the long-term role a dental hygiene program would have in improving oral health in Nicaragua. Along with their partner, Physicians for Peace, the team hopes to launch the dental hygiene program at UNAN-Leon in 2013. |
